Roughly calculated, Minimum solar project cost is somewhere in the $3 per watt ballpark, so expect to pay at least $15,000 for the solar system. Battery cost is additional $120 per battery. 5kW from the panels for 5 hours is 25kWh. Each battery will store around 1.2 kWh, so you need over 20 batteries to store 25kWh, which is another $2500. Add in some budget for the wiring, trenching, conduit, insurance, etc.

 

Keep in mind that a battery backup solar system will NOT power your home during a utility outage if it is grid-tied. Grid-tie requires a drop-out inverter which cannot produce power unless the grid is up. This prevents your inverter from electrocuting an electric lineman repairing the outage.
